Scholarships and Youth Programs
Investing in the Next Generation
The American Legion has long believed that investing in our nation's youth is one of the greatest ways to strengthen our communities. Through scholarships, leadership programs, and educational resources, the Legion helps young people pursue higher education while preparing them to become informed and engaged citizens.
Each year, The American Legion and its affiliated organizations help award millions of dollars in scholarships to deserving students. Opportunities are available for a wide range of applicants, including participants in American Legion programs and, in many cases, the children and grandchildren of wartime veterans. The American Legion also publishes "Need a Lift?", a comprehensive guide to scholarships, financial aid, and planning for higher education.
Scholarships and Community Support
American Legion Post 221 proudly supports local students by sponsoring scholarships that help further their educational goals. In addition to scholarships, our Post provides financial and volunteer support to a variety of community projects and American Legion programs that benefit veterans, youth, and the Tehachapi community.
American Legion California Boys State and Girls State
One of the American Legion Family's premier youth leadership programs is California Boys State and California Girls State. These highly respected programs provide high school juniors with an immersive, hands-on experience in how local, county, and state government functions.
Rather than simply studying government in a classroom, delegates create and operate their own cities, counties, and state governments. They campaign for office, vote in elections, participate in legislative sessions, conduct court proceedings, and gain firsthand experience in the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of American citizenship.
The American Legion established Boys State in 1935, when Illinois Legionnaires Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card organized the first program at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Their vision was to educate young Americans about democracy and responsible citizenship through active participation rather than lecture.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Girls State, providing young women with the same outstanding opportunity to develop leadership skills, civic knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for public service.
Each year, outstanding high school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units to attend these programs. In many cases, tuition and related expenses are paid by sponsoring American Legion organizations, local businesses, or other community partners.
Today, Boys State and Girls State continue to be among the nation's most respected youth leadership programs, inspiring generations of young Americans to become leaders in their schools, communities, military, public service, and professions.
American Legion Post 221 is proud to sponsor deserving students from the Tehachapi area to attend these exceptional programs, investing in the leaders of tomorrow while strengthening our community today.
